Homicides

The murder rate in Los Angeles is up 50% since 2019. Most victims are young, Black, and Hispanic males from low-income neighborhoods. Homicides are at levels higher than seen in the last 15 years. Assaults, burglaries, auto thefts, and commercial thefts are all significantly higher than just a few years ago. As your District Attorney, the safety of you, your family, and your neighbors will be my highest priority. I will mandate an equitable, safety-centered approach to administering justice for all Angelenos in our communities.

Thefts

Shoplifting is de facto legal in most parts of Los Angeles County due to recent changes in state law that reduced the penalties for theft and a District Attorney who turned a blind eye toward it. Minority-owned small businesses, particularly essential in low-income neighborhoods, are being decimated by aggressive shoplifting. Businesses that already operate at a razor-thin profit margin must either pass the cost of theft on to their customers who can least afford to pay or shutter their businesses altogether. LA needs a District Attorney who understands that small businesses are the backbone of local communities and will fight to support them.

Auto Thefts

Auto thefts reached historic levels in the City of Los Angeles in 2022, with 25,400 vehicles stolen. That number constitutes the highest annual count since LAPD began publishing its data in 2010. In addition to auto thefts, there is an epidemic of auto break-ins and stolen catalytic converters. 2022 saw a record number of auto parts thefts in the City of Los Angeles, with over 7,000 reported thefts. That number represents a nearly 40% increase over 2021 and more than three times the reported thefts in 2018 and 2019.

Transit Crimes

Soaring crime on our trains and busses is destroying efforts to reduce climate change by scaring off passengers. Reports of serious crimes on the Metro Transit Watch App increased by 24 percent this last year, and transit operators were assaulted at the rate of 14 per month. The President of the LA City Council, Paul Krekorian, called this rise in crime “an existential threat to the Metro System.”

All Los Angelenos have the right to be safe in their homes, schools, businesses, public places, and places of worship. Families in every neighborhood are entitled to live with peace of mind. As District Attorney, I will restore credibility to the criminal justice system by ensuring accountability through a fair and proportional application of the law.
