John McKinney Could Become Los Angeles’ First Black City Attorney
John McKinney wants Los Angeles voters to know exactly what he believes he brings to the 2026 race for Los Angeles City Attorney: experience, courtroom credibility, a public safety agenda and a life story rooted in perseverance.
The longtime Los Angeles County deputy district attorney is seeking the office after nearly three decades as a prosecutor, making the case that his courtroom experience and leadership within the District Attorney’s Office have prepared him to lead one of the city’s most important legal positions.
“I’ve been a prosecutor for nearly 30 years,” McKinney said. “That means I also have 30 years of litigation experience. Both are central to the role of Los Angeles City Attorney.”
McKinney said the office serves two critical functions. It prosecutes misdemeanor crimes committed within the City of Los Angeles while also serving as legal counsel for the city, advising elected officials and defending Los Angeles in civil litigation.
